Sakhalin hydrogen train project launched at Eastern Economic Forum
Russian Railways, the government of the Sakhalin region, Rosatom State Corporation and Transmashholding have signed a protocol to launch a hydrogen train service on Sakhalin Island.
The protocol was signed by Governor of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko, General Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, Kirill Lipa, General Director of Transmashholding and First Deputy General Director and Director of the Development and International Affairs Block of Rosatom State Corporation, Kirill Komarov.
Valery Limarenko, Governor of the Sakhalin region, said: “We will design a pilot batch of seven trains. We are to create a low-tonnage hydrogen production plant and a network of refuelling complexes directly on Sakhalin Island, form a pilot test site and launch a regular passenger rail service. A competence centre will be established on the basis of the island university to train the necessary personnel. The Sakhalin region is thus becoming the leader in Russia in the promising hydrogen sector. For the region and its inhabitants this means increased tax revenues, preservation of the environment and the creation of additional new high-tech jobs.”
“We are always working on improving the environmental friendliness of rolling stock. Hydrogen trains are our immediate future. With them it will be possible to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere to zero. Of course, we still have a long way to go to solve the technological and economic aspects, but we will certainly find a comfortable solution for everyone”, – added Oleg Belozerov.
“TMH is investing significant resources in the project, – said Kirill Lipa, the general director of Transmashholding. – The best engineers and designers of the holding have taken up this challenge and have already validated the technical aspects of the future rolling stock. We are convinced that the success of this project and its scaling up can significantly affect not only the environmental component of rail transport, but also give an impulse to the development of technologies in general.
Within the framework of this project, Rosatom is responsible for the production and supply of hydrogen fuel, organization and operation of the refueling infrastructure for the hydrogen train project”, – announced the Deputy Director General and Head of the Development and International Business Unit of Rosatom State Corporation, Kirill Komarov.
