TMH exercises option to refurbish metro trains for Sofia Metro
Metrowagonmash (a company of Transmashholding group) and the Sofia metro signed an agreement for the exercise of an option to refurbish and modernize the metro trains of the Bulgarian capital.
In the first stage, it is planned to refurbish and modernize 12 metro cars model 81-717.4/714.4 which make up three metro trains. In total, under the terms of the contract, Metrowagonmash will refurbish 40 metro cars. MWM will refurbish the exterior and interior of the metro trains. Potentially flammable interior cladding materials will be replaced with those that meet modern passenger transportation safety requirements.
Passenger compartments and the pilot cabin will be fitted with new safety glass and new, more comfortable seats and chairs. The metro trains will be equipped with smoke detectors, temperature sensors, LED information displays, handles and grab bars with a “warm” coating. The leading cars will be equipped with special places for wheelchairs and strollers. MWM will replace virtually all the equipment in the trains.
The wheel axles will be equipped with anti-skid protection and the trains will be equipped with new coupling mechanisms. The refurbishment and modernization of the metro trains will extend their service life by 15 years. As a result, the Sofia metro will receive modern metro cars with new equipment and elegant design.
Metrowagonmash has already completed the refurbishment and modernization of 8 metro cars of the 81-717.4/714.4 series (2 four-car metro trainsets). The refurbished cars were returned to the Sofia metro in early 2020. Metrowagonmash and Sofia Metro have been working together since 1998. Practically the entire fleet of metro cars in the Bulgarian capital – 168 units – consists of metro cars manufactured by the company from the Moscow region.
